Local city council not taking action to widen Highway 133.
Accidents keep crashing on what’s ranked one of the most dangerous roads in California: Laguna Canyon Road, California Highway 133.
For decades now, the Laguna Beach City Council has repeatedly denied various plans to widen the road from two lanes to four lanes, even as the road has seen dozens of fatal crashes over its time.
Despite this loss of human life and surrounding controversy from residents, the council has so far been uninterested in taking appropriate action to fix the problem.
One of the most recent major accidents was on July 27 at 3:27 pm, where six vehicles crashed into one another at the intersection of Laguna Canyon Road and Canyon Acres Drive.
Stu News Laguna quoted Laguna Beach Police Department’s Public Information Officer Lt. Jim Cota, who said, “Officers arrived and discovered there were six vehicles involved, and two were engulfed in flames. Four persons were transported to Mission Hospital-Mission Viejo with major injuries. Traffic was diverted, and one lane in each direction was opened for the majority of the time.”
Back in early July, a car slammed into a utility pole on Laguna Canyon Road. It snarled traffic for eight hours until police cleared the area and Frontier Communications crews, shipped in from Riverside, fixed the pole.
The only person involved was the driver, who wasn’t injured and there was no DUI. But other incidents on the road have been fatal.
According to a warning from Avrek Law, “This stretch of road has been known for its many fatal late-night accidents. Practice caution when driving on this road, and drive well below the speed limit to avoid fast oncoming drunk drivers and, ultimately, a Laguna Canyon accident.”
