Laguna Beach Police Rally Around Prostate Cancer

Those creating awareness behind the disease are hoping to raise critical funds.

Police in the Laguna Beach Police Department are partnering with Grow & Give to bring awareness to prostate cancer. Grow & Give is a national awareness and fundraising campaign to zero out prostate cancer.

According to Grow & Give, there are 3.1million Americans with prostate cancer. Black men are slightly over one and a half times more likely to be diagnosed with the disease than their white counterparts, and a prostate cancer patient dies every 15 minutes in America.

Grow & Give provides education, financial and emotional support to patients as well as free testing. They support prostate cancer research and bring awareness of the disease.

According to the Mayo Clinic website, the risk of prostate cancer increases after the age of fifty. In African-Americans prostate cancer tends to be more aggressive. The risk of prostate cancer increases if there are family members with a history of prostate or breast cancer and in people who are overweight.

Symptoms of advanced prostate cancer include trouble urinating or a decreased force of the stream, blood in the urine or semen, erectile dysfunction, bone pain, and unexplained weight loss.

A diet filled with fruit and vegetables, daily exercise, and maintaining a healthy body weight are the best ways to prevent prostate cancer.

Laguna Beach Police will show their support in the fight against prostate cancer and bring awareness by growing a mustache or wearing a blue pin mustache on their uniforms.
